The Raijor Dal has demanded that the Assam government provide a one-time assistance of ₹15,000 to every flood-affected family in Nazira constituency by midnight on September 8, warning that a sustained agitation would begin from September 9 if the demand is not met.
The demand was raised at a public gathering held at the Satkhola public playground in Dugdar, Nazira constituency. According to the party, thousands of people attending the gathering raised their hands in support of the demand.
Speaking to the media, Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi alleged that despite Nazira having a BJP legislator, a large number of flood-affected families in the constituency have still not received the ₹15,000 immediate relief announced by the government.
₹10 lakh compensation sought for devastated families
The party has also demanded ₹10 lakh compensation for every family whose home and livelihood have been devastated by the floods.
Raijor Dal alleged that the compensation announced on the basis of government surveys — ₹1.20 lakh for affected families in urban areas and between ₹1.70 lakh and ₹3 lakh for those in rural areas — is inadequate considering the scale of damage caused by the floods.
CBI probe demanded into July 19 floods
Gogoi also demanded a CBI investigation into the circumstances surrounding the July 19 floods, naming Sivasagar minister Sushanta Borgohain and MLAs Dharmeswar Konwar and Mayur Borgohain in connection with the allegations.
The party alleged that illegal mining of coal, stone and sand, along with activities that weakened the banks of the Dikhow river, contributed to the severity of the flooding.
These allegations were made by Raijor Dal and have not been independently established.
Demand to double Orunodoi assistance
The party has further demanded that all flood-affected families be brought under the Orunodoi scheme.
It has sought an increase in the monthly assistance from ₹1,250 to ₹2,500, with the enhanced support to continue for one year for families affected by the floods.
Four demands, agitation from September 9
Raijor Dal said its proposed agitation will centre on four key demands:
- ₹15,000 immediate one-time assistance for every flood-affected family.
- ₹10 lakh compensation for families whose homes and livelihoods have been devastated.
- A CBI investigation into the July 19 flood disaster and the allegations surrounding illegal mining and damage to the Dikhow riverbank.
- Inclusion of all flood-affected families under Orunodoi, with monthly assistance increased to ₹2,500 for one year.
Gogoi said the government has until midnight on September 8 to meet the demands. Otherwise, the party will launch a continuous agitation from September 9.
