Sribhumi, October 28: Assam Jatiya Parishad president Lurinjyoti Gogoi expressed strong resentment over an alleged attack on a Bihu troupe in Sribhumi. During his visit, Gogoi held up Bihu attire that had reportedly been torn and damaged in the incident, condemning what he described as an attack on Assamese cultural identity and pride.
A protest was organised at the Sribhumi district headquarters by members of the Chutia community and leaders and workers of the Assam Jatiya Parishad. Protesters gathered outside the District Commissioner’s office and also demonstrated in front of the Superintendent of Police’s office. Carrying placards, they demanded the arrest of those involved in the attack.
‘Bihu Is a Symbol of Assamese Pride’
Gogoi said Bihu was not merely a festival but an important symbol of Assamese identity, culture and collective pride. He said an attack involving Bihu attire was unacceptable and should not be tolerated.
He also stated that criminals had no caste or religion, while insisting that those responsible for attacking Assamese culture should not escape accountability. He called on the administration to identify and arrest the people involved in the incident.
Allegation of Attempts to Create Division in Barak Valley
Gogoi alleged that attempts were being made to create divisions between Assamese and Bengali communities in the Barak Valley. He said the administration had a responsibility to identify those behind such efforts.
The protesters also called for appropriate action to prevent the incident from fuelling linguistic or communal tensions.
Protesters Demand Arrests
The demonstrators demanded that everyone involved in the alleged attack on the Bihu troupe be identified and arrested promptly. They also urged the government and administration to take firm steps to protect Assamese cultural identity and the dignity of Bihu.
The response of the authorities and any action taken against those allegedly involved remain to be seen.
