Guwahati: A social media post has claimed that a plan to bring around 10,000 people to Zubeen Kshetra on September 19 to offer prayers has been changed, with 86 people now proposed to visit the site each day for around seven days to recite Kalma and seek justice for singer Zubeen Garg.
The claim was made in a social media post by Mehboob Hussain. However, the post could not be independently verified as an official statement from the organisers of the proposed programme. It is therefore not clear whether the revised plan has been formally adopted by all those associated with the earlier announcement.
According to Hussain’s post, the earlier proposal for a gathering of around 10,000 people on September 19 has been withdrawn because bringing such a large number of people together at Zubeen Kshetra could create difficulties.
The post claims that, under the proposed revised arrangement, 86 people would visit Zubeen Kshetra each day for around seven days from September 19, recite Kalma and raise the demand for justice for Zubeen Garg.
Earlier Poster Called for 10,000 People
An earlier poster circulating on social media had called for 10,000 Muslim people to gather at Zubeen Kshetra on September 19.
The poster mentioned participation from areas including Dhing, Lahorighat and Dhubri and referred to prayers being offered at the venue. It also carried the name of Mohsin Khan in connection with the proposed programme.
The authenticity and organisational status of the poster have not been independently established.
What Does the New Post Claim?
In his later post, Hussain said he had seen different opinions regarding the earlier announcement and acknowledged that the decision could have caused inconvenience.
He subsequently claimed that instead of bringing 10,000 people together on a single day, a smaller group of 86 people a day would carry out the proposed programme for around seven days.
The post describes the proposed activity as a peaceful and symbolic expression of support for Zubeen Garg and a demand for justice.
‘Jangi Andolan’ Mentioned in Post
The social media post also says that a larger movement could be launched if the demand for justice is not given due importance.
This reference to a possible ‘jangi andolan’ is contained in Hussain’s personal social media post. It should not be interpreted as an official announcement of any organisation or as confirmation that such an agitation has been planned.
There has also been no official government or administrative statement confirming the proposed seven-day programme.
Zubeen’s First Death Anniversary
September 19 will mark one year since the death of Assam’s much-loved singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg. Various programmes are being planned across the state in connection with his first death anniversary, while demands for justice in connection with his death continue to remain a major public issue.
The proposed prayer programme at Zubeen Kshetra has consequently attracted attention because of its scale and the subsequent claim that the plan may have been changed.
At present, however, the 10,000-person gathering is an earlier social media proposal, while the revised plan involving 86 people a day comes from a subsequent social media post by Mehboob Hussain. Neither has been independently confirmed as an official programme announcement.
