Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday hailed what he described as 7.8% growth, saying India had achieved it despite wars, global crises and supply-chain disruption.
Modi congratulated citizens and credited their resolve, hard work and collective strength for the growth. He said the world had seen no stability since the Covid period in 2020, while conflict-related news was coming from “all sides”.
Modi also said some people within India were spreading despair and “echoing lies”, but said the country had overcome such efforts to attain the growth rate. The growth figure and the assertions were made by Modi; the remarks did not specify the period or data source for the 7.8% figure.
Calling for the momentum to be maintained, he said building an Atmanirbhar Bharat, or self-reliant India, was essential. He urged people to follow the “Vocal for Local” and swadeshi message, saying foreign leisure trips and weddings abroad should be avoided.
Modi also said people should not buy gold unless necessary. He said greater emphasis on domestic products and self-reliance would help India fulfil the dreams of its young generation and make it a developed country by the centenary of Independence.
“Our policy is right, our intentions are clear,” Modi said, adding that the strength of 140 crore Indians was taking the country to new heights. His appeal places consumer choices alongside the government’s stated push for self-reliance.
