Guwahati, October 28: Garima Saikia Garg, along with a group of artists, actors and others, met the Governor of Assam and submitted a memorandum outlining seven demands for a stronger and faster legal process in the case concerning the death of late singer Zubeen Garg.
Speaking after the meeting, Garima said the circumstances surrounding Zubeen Garg’s death must be clarified at the earliest. She also expressed concern over bail granted to some of the accused and stressed that the legal process must proceed firmly to ensure that those accused are dealt with in accordance with the law.
Rahul Gautam Sarma, speaking on behalf of the delegation, explained the seven demands. The first calls for strong legal opposition to pending bail applications and prompt challenges before higher courts wherever necessary against bail already granted.
The second demand seeks a unified prosecution coordination mechanism under the Advocate General of Assam. The third calls for the engagement of experienced and capable legal counsel to ensure effective representation, including in bail-related proceedings before the Supreme Court.
The fourth demand focuses on strengthening the prosecution and safeguarding witnesses against possible attempts to influence them. The fifth calls for an expedited and uninterrupted trial, with related proceedings in different courts also being taken up without unnecessary delay.
The sixth demand urges the state government to keep the family and the public informed at regular intervals about the progress of the case and the next steps in the legal process. The seventh calls for a thorough examination of other alleged offences that came to light during the investigation.
Garima said people wanted to know what exactly happened to Zubeen Garg on September 19, the day of the incident. She stressed that updates on the case should be shared not only with the family but also with the public.
Responding to questions about whether different approaches to the movement for justice could divide supporters, Garima said they remained united in their demand. She urged people not to allow suspicion or mistrust to weaken their collective effort.
The delegation appealed to the Governor to intervene and help ensure that the legal process proceeds in the right direction and with greater strength. The progress of the investigation and the subsequent legal proceedings continue to be closely watched by the public.
