Guwahati, October 28: “Who is Paresh Baruah fighting for? For Assam.” Assam minister Biswajit Daimary made the remark while praising Paresh Baruah, the chief of the banned militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom–Independent (ULFA-I).
Referring to Baruah’s struggle and sacrifices, Daimary said that he had been speaking about the security of Assam. According to the minister, the sacrifices associated with Baruah and his associates have not been adequately analysed by the people of Assam.
Daimary further remarked that if any force had managed to maintain its influence in Assam over the past 50 years, it was this force.
The minister’s remarks have sparked fresh discussion about the role of Paresh Baruah and ULFA-I in Assam.
