Greater Noida: A shocking incident in Greater Noida has raised fresh concerns over the safety of women and minors after a 16-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped inside a moving sleeper bus.
The incident has drawn comparisons with the horrific Nirbhaya case, particularly because the alleged crime took place inside a public transport vehicle. Police have arrested the bus driver, Kuldeep, and conductor, Sandeep, in connection with the case.
According to the police investigation, the incident took place on August 4. The teenager was travelling from Mainpuri towards Noida to visit relatives. After reportedly getting down at the wrong location, she became stranded near Pari Chowk amid heavy rain and darkness.
Seeking help, the teenager allegedly stopped a sleeper bus. She was told that the bus was heading towards Sector 63 and subsequently boarded it.
According to her complaint, the situation took a horrifying turn after the bus started moving. The conductor allegedly sexually assaulted her, while she was also allegedly threatened when she resisted.
The teenager was later allegedly dropped near Ring Road in the Kashmere Gate area of Delhi, following which she approached the police and reported the incident.
Driver and Conductor Arrested
Following an investigation, police arrested 39-year-old driver Kuldeep and 26-year-old conductor Sandeep from a parking area in Timarpur, North Delhi.
The bus has also been seized as part of the investigation. Police reportedly carried out forensic examination of the vehicle and collected CCTV footage from different locations along the suspected route.
Investigators are continuing to examine the available evidence to establish the sequence of events and determine the full circumstances of the alleged crime.
Fresh Questions Over Safety
The case has once again brought the safety of women and children travelling on public transport into focus.
While the incident has been described by many as reminiscent of the Nirbhaya case, the allegations against the accused will ultimately be determined through the legal process.
Police have continued their investigation, while the arrested accused are facing legal proceedings in connection with the case.
