Auckland, October 30: Glenn Phillips smashed a spectacular century and Jacob Duffy claimed four wickets as New Zealand defeated India by 87 runs in the fourth T20 International at Eden Park on Friday.
Batting first after India captain Shreyas Iyer elected to field, New Zealand posted a massive 259/7 in 20 overs. In reply, India managed only 172/9 in their allotted 20 overs.
Phillips led New Zealand’s batting charge with a blistering 107 off just 49 deliveries, including six fours and 10 sixes. Michael Bracewell provided explosive support, scoring 65 off 25 balls.
The pair stitched together a rapid 115-run partnership for the fifth wicket in just 41 deliveries, taking New Zealand to a formidable total.
For India, Mayank Yadav was the most successful bowler, claiming three wickets for 48 runs. However, the Indian bowling attack struggled to contain the New Zealand batters.
Chasing 260, India suffered an early setback when Jacob Duffy dismissed Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan in the opening over. The early blows put the visitors under considerable pressure.
India failed to build the partnerships required to keep the chase alive. Duffy finished with impressive figures of 4/23, while Mitchell Santner picked up two wickets. India eventually finished at 172/9.
The victory gave New Zealand their first win in the ongoing five-match T20I series. India, however, continue to lead 3-1 after winning the first three matches. The fifth and final T20I is scheduled to be played in Hamilton.
