Diganta Tamuli has demanded a speedy investigation and the arrest of those responsible within 24 hours over the death of Manasjyoti Chetia Phukan, a Bir Lachit Sena worker from Simoluguri, in what he described as a suspicious road accident.
Tamuli alleged that Phukan’s death was not an ordinary accident but a planned killing. He said Phukan had become involved in attempts to resolve a land dispute in which, according to the allegation, a local indigenous Muslim family, including an elderly man, was harassed and evicted from its land by another family described by Tamuli as suspected Bangladeshi migrants.
According to Tamuli, Phukan was allegedly called to the site and killed in a planned manner. He said a case has been registered at a police station and that the Assam government has announced a magisterial-level inquiry. The allegations could not be independently verified.
Tamuli said merely announcing an inquiry would not be enough, and called on the government to complete the investigation quickly, apprehend the accused and ensure appropriate punishment.
He also alleged that large numbers of suspected Bangladeshi migrants had entered the Bihubar area amid the flood situation. Tamuli claimed that around 1,000 to 1,500 such labourers had been brought to the area 10 to 15 years ago by unscrupulous businessmen to manually collect stones from a river, initially staying in Borshil before moving towards Bihubar.
He demanded the eviction of people he described as illegal Bangladeshi migrants, warning that organisations would be compelled to take strong steps with public support if the government did not act.
