Nagaon: The state tourism minister on Tuesday set a December deadline to complete 504 model anganwadi centres approved in Nagaon district at an estimated cost of about Rs 82 crore.
During a review of the Women and Child Development Department with the local MLA, the minister said 273 of the centres had already been completed and the remaining projects were in their final stage. Department officials were directed to ensure that the pending work, along with other scheme-related work, is carried out properly.
The minister also asked officials and the district administration to work together towards making the district free of child marriage. The appeal followed the Chief Minister’s call for strict action to eliminate child marriage across Assam, the minister said.
On child labour, the minister called for a special drive and greater public awareness, particularly among parents, to ensure children remain in school and do not enter work after dropping out. The minister said awareness was needed that child labour can involve minors up to the age of 18.
Tourism development in Nagaon will also be discussed with local representatives, the minister said. Nagaon has been included in tourism circuits identified across Assam, and the next phase will focus on detailing those circuits and expanding tourism planning across districts. Progress on the pending anganwadi centres will now be measured against the December target.
